Making Biodiesel At Home

An Introduction To Making Biodiesel At Home

Biodiesel is one of the best alternative fuel options that is available in the market at a commercial scale. Making biodiesel at home is however a much better option when it comes to usage of the fuel at a household scale. This may be enough for heating up your home and to be used for the cooking part. You can even consider production at a scale where you can even have enough biodiesel to drive a station wagon.

Generally you can purchase a biodiesel production kit from the market. You can use any standard kit for production of biodiesel in your home. Your process would move around three tanks. The first tank that you use would contain straight vegetable oil or half vegetable. It is advised to fill this tank by the halves in one go. Your second tank is the pre-mix tank. This is the tank where mixing of all the chemicals would take place. The vegetable oil is mixed with catalyst (lye and methanol) in this tank.

The third tank to be used in the process is the wash tank. All the mixing work that has been done in the pre-mix tank would be used here. It is termed the wash tank because here water is used to wash away all the impurities and obtain the biodiesel.

You should begin with filling the first tank with the appropriate oil or feedstock. If you are lucky, some restaurants might provide this for free. If you can not get a free ride, you would have to shell out the money and buy the oil in bulk. Do not worry, the vegetable oil to be used is dirt cheap, especially if you use Waste Vegetable Oil.

The process from here on gets on a bit complicated. You have to first mix the catalyst in the fuel tank This should include both lye and methanol. Add to this the vegetable oil when it is thoroughly mixed. Blend the mixture and let all of it settle and separate. Once, separated, the glycerin is at the bottom which has to drained. The rest is biodiesel.

From here the biodiesel is moved to wash tank. Form here water would be misted through the oil. The misting of water drains any impurities which might have remained. Once complete, the biodiesel that is procured from the procedure is pure and ready to be used.

The process does look very complicated and if you are an absolute beginner, it is complicated as well. But the thing is once you have been through the process of making biodiesel at home once or twice, the overall process would come to you very easily. You can even sell this biodiesel at small scale.
